Welcome 2023!Happy New Year! The coming planetary transits support an opening for creative ideas for intentions in the coming year AND a need for continued resting and nesting. With the holidays behind us, you may need to gather and collect yourself after all the energy output these seasonal festivities often bring. I'd like to encourage you to write your insights down without the pressure of starting new things immediately since Mercury and Mars will still be retrograded a little bit into the New Year. January 3rd - 6th Venus Sextile Jupiter As we move into the first week of 2023, Venus and Jupiter, known as the “benefics” in astrology, bring an influence of positive, feel-good energy. January 3rd - 6th opens the space to feel increasing optimism for reinvigorating your capacity to create what you want. Venus influences our relationships and social connections and opens our senses about creating beauty in our lives. Jupiter is about growth and expansion and stimulates a feeling of abundant energy. With Jupiter’s influence synched to Venus comes the possibility of opening into enthusiastic explorations of new horizons in cultivating yourself and your relationships. These planets are the “benefics” because they can bring ease, optimism, and a sense of good fortune wherever they influence. When they are in a sextile aspect with each other, they stimulate you to express the best qualities of the planetary energies described above. January 6th Full Moon in Cancer 3:08 PM PST On Jan 6th, we will have a Full Moon in Cancer. Cancer is about home and family, and nesting. Although the New Year often finds a mainstream collective emphasis on jumping into celebration and “resolutions,” the Cancer Full Moon on the 6th can remind you that it’s okay to rest and nest. Cancer also brings qualities of nurturing and mothering. In the winter, nature puts its energy down into the roots of plants and trees. Allow the warmth of the Cancer Full Moon energy to nurture the roots of your intentions until the power of your “new year’s resolutions” is ready to rise. A full Moon can open us up emotionally, and Cancer can strengthen your emotional body portal. If you have complicated feelings coming up on or around this Full Moon, tune into the above Cancer aspects. Notice what’s been happening recently in your home and family situations and your needs for nurturing, nesting, and resting. Your emotions can guide you to take better care of these aspects for yourself in your life. On Winter Solstice, the Sun enters Capricorn, and Winter's First Full Moon is always in Cancer. From Winter Solstice, the Sun’s light will grow longer each day over the next six months until we come to Summer Solstice when the Sun enters Cancer. At this time, we start slowly pivoting toward darkness, and subsequently, the first Full Moon of Summer is in Capricorn. Intertwining the Winter dark and the Summer Light reminds me of the commonly known symbolism of the Yin-Yang (TaiJi) symbol. Yin represents the winter, dark and cold, and Yang represents Summer, light, and warmth. The large black zone (Yin) in the Taiji symbol contains a little white circle inside, and the large white area (Yang) includes a black dot inside, indicating light within the dark and dark within the light, respectively. The small circles of opposite colors dancing inside the larger arcing shapes of the seasons are like the Full Moons that occur close to the Solstices. The first Winter Full Moon is in Cancer, the sign of the Summer Solstice, as the light begins growing on Winter Solstice. It’s inspiring to watch the endless layers of connections that exist between the movements of celestial bodies and the significance of mythic symbols. This rising of intention/resolve/resolutions in the heart of winter upon the New Year is like the little white circle inside the great black field of Yin in the Yin-Yang (Taiji) Symbol. January 7th - 9th Mercury Trine Uranus After the Full Moon, the Trine between Mercury and Uranus can influence your mind to open to visions and ideas of how to approach your life. Mercury connects to our thinking and verbal communication, while Uranus keeps us open to new ways of doing things. Recognizing there is more out there to work with than we once thought. A sense of excitement and freedom comes with the Uranuian energy as it gives you the urge to break out of old stuck patterns and ways of thinking and living. A Trine aspect in astrology works like the smooth flow of two rivers merging. With this ease from January 7th through the 9th, the best qualities of Mercury and Uranus come into play and can help you plant new seeds of ideas and inspiration for 2023. Write down what comes to mind! Implementing the ideas during this Mercury/Uranus transit may come later. As the Full Moon in Cancer suggests, it’s an excellent time to nurture your seeds. Feel your new ideas come alive inside you—vision how they can positively change your life. After January 12th, when Mars goes Direct, it will be a better time to sort through how you’ll want to implement them. Mercury will continue to be in retrograde until January 18th, which is another good reminder that it might not be time yet to take action. The sense of rewinding, reviewing, reflecting, releasing, and recalibrating is a good continued practice through this Mercury retrograde period. January 12th Mars goes Direct (retrograde period Oct 30th - Jan 12th) We made our way through the final months of the year, the holidays, and now early January with a slowed-down Mars in retrograde. Mars influences our physical energy and action in life and has been retrograde since October 30th. Did you notice more blocks in the last couple of months? Mars in retrograde may be the reason. Despite the possible frustrations regarding the extended time it may have taken to complete things, this period aligned well with the natural flow of late autumn and winter—a time for resting, nesting, and increased sleep. Mars is going Direct on January 12th. Your energy begins to pick up, and things might seem more open for forward movement. As with all planetary retrogrades, the planet appears to be moving backward in the sky and going over the same sky terrain it had just covered. On the 12th, Mars will have retrograded back to the same place it was in the sky on Sept 4th. Reflect on the essential things you’ve been putting your energy towards since Sept 4th - these same themes will most likely continue until Mars gets out of its retrograde shadow on March 15th. This overall ends up being a 6-month time period that closely reviews what you were most actively involved in back in September and October. This final stretch until March 15th will be when these things start moving forward. The time beginning after January 12 is time to deliberate and take action to implement the necessary steps for manifesting your goals and see how your efforts pay off in the Spring. It takes time for a planet to get back to speed after being in retrograde, so whatever you’ve been working on might still seem slow over January. If you find this true, it may require an extra emphasis on patience. ~ With astrology, the most helpful advice is always individual and personalized based on your personal astrology birth chart and life situations.
